A group of 19 FlyerTalkers met at the Concord Hotel and then went by bus and MRT to a dock where we hopped on bum boats and took the one-hour ride to Malaysia. We had to go through exit and entry procedures in both countries, but it was fairly painless. Once at the dock in a little corner of Malaysia, we took taxis to a town with a well regarded seafood restaurant. Along the way our friendly drive pointed out rubber tree plantations, a family of monkey frolicking by the side of the road, and military “pillboxes” set up to defend against the Japanese before World War II.
Apparently Singaporeans make the trek there regularly because the prices are so much cheaper. We enjoyed a long and leisurely lunch with a variety of seafood and other items. The restaurant was more of a Chinese restaurant than Malaysian, and the soft shell crab was particularly outstanding. The town itself did not appear to be particularly prosperous.
After a ride back several of us shared a taxi straight back to the Conrad, where we enjoyed evening snacks and beverages in the Executive Lounge along with upwards of a dozen other FlyerTalkers, and called it a night.
This morning we enjoyed a fabulous breakfast in Oscar's Restaurant, and are now catching up quickly on the Internet before heading to the Jurong Bird Park.
It's great to be back in Singapore.
Kathy and Brian
Two retired educators alternating joyfully between seeing the world and enjoying our eight grandchildren (in order of birth), Jake, Avery, Taegan, Lily, Peyton, Riley, Blane, and Jace.
Kathy and Brian met in the clarinet section of the University of California (Santa Barbara) Symphony Orchestra several decades ago.
Brian's Western Canadian roots and Kathy's Colorado ties resulted in their making beautiful music together along with producing a cross-border crop of descendants.
Kathy spent a year studying in Vienna at the Institute for European Studies and the University of Vienna.
Brian started the school band program in Hope, British Columbia, and later became the high school's vice-principal for 6 years and subsequently principal for 15 years before retiring in 2001.
Kathy, in between raising our three children, taught kindergarten and first grade, middle school, and high school - mathematics, computer studies, ESL, and her first love, band, before retiring in 2001.
We enjoy sharing our travel experiences and providing the odd travel tip to friends, relatives, and visitors.
